2009 Conferences
Young and old and every age in-between have been coming together on Star Island since 1897 to form lasting friendships and inspirational summer communities. Science, world affairs, religion, music, and the arts are common workshop themes. Hikes on the rocks, rocking on the front porch, swimming in Gosport Harbor, and enjoying hearty meals in the historic Oceanic hotel are all highlights of what is sure to be a summer retreat you’ll think about all year long. Star Island is 1 of 9 islands 8 miles off the coast of Portsmouth. Many conferences and events are held mid-June to mid-September. Some First Church folk have attended the annual Weekend Conference of the Laity in August and would be happy to tell you about it. Brochures for the various conferences, some a week and some a weekend, are available in the church office or www.starisland.org or request a “Blue Book” from Star Island Corporation at Morton-Benedict House, 30 Middle Street, Portsmouth NH 03801, Phone (603) 430-6272, Fax (603) 430-6270. Each conference is self-administered, arranging for speakers, workshops, and childcare as well as registering participants. Each conference also sets its own registration policy. Some fill very quickly but others have openings right up to the start date. Stop by the bulletin board by the kitchen and see the Star Island poster which lists the various conferences and dates.
